The 2011 pilgrimage to the Shaolin Temple by USSD leaders, students, and family was filled with cultural exchange, including honors bestowed upon several USSD Masters. Their experience, dedication, and loyalty were recognized by Shaolin Abbot Shi Yong Xin and USSD founder Grandmaster Charles Mattera. The title of “Hanshi”, a Japanese term meaning “senior master” and “teacher of teachers”, was bestowed upon 7th degree masters Richard Black, Jack Turner, and Larry Boritz. The title “Kyoshi”, which means “teacher of philosophy of the martial arts” was awarded to 4th degree masters Jody Neal and Gary Flickinger, and 5th degree master Bill Miller. The July 4th event was one of many highlights on the USSD China trip this year, part of an ongoing tradition that builds upon the USSD/Shaolin Temple relationship, and demonstrated respect and support for the Masters who are the backbone of the company.
